Workforce planning for radiation oncology in Canada

modelling study by Stuckless et al. published in Radiotherapy & Oncology (Green Journal 2012, doi:10.1016/j.radonc.2011.12.025) models and projects Canadian radiation oncology (RO) workforce needs over the next several decades. The model predicts a short-term surplus of RO trainees followed by a projected deficit in 2020.

Loewen et al. surveyed radiation oncology physicians across Canada who completed specialty training between 2000-2010 to obtain information about their employment and training characteristics; the 2012 publication is available in Canadian Medical Education Journal (2012).

The Ontario Ministry of Health published a report in October 2010 which models and projects physician needs through 2030.

A study by Smith and Buchholz (JCO 2010 28 5160, doi:10.1200/JCO.2010.31.2520) projects demand for radiation therapy to grow 10 times faster than supply between 2010 and 2020. This study was performed in the United States.

The results of the 2012 ASTRO workforce study results were reported in two articles; the first article provides a general overview of the radiation oncology workforce, while the second article describes elements of radiation oncologists and residents. The 2nd article concluded that most radiation oncologists felt that the job market was balanced between supply-and-demand (51%), though 33% of respondents felt there was an oversupply of radiation oncologists.
